A well-walked History
Due to the enactment and promulgation of Local Autonomy Act (Article 32) in July 4, 1949, the first general elections took place in April 1952. Pohang city assembly was established with the opening of the first city assembly of Pohang in May 5 of the same year. However, based on Article 4 of the Military Revolution Committee Obligation, the third local assembly was dissolved in May 16, 1961.
After 30 years since then, autonomous system was revived and the city assembly elections were held in March 26, 1991, and the 4th Pohang city assembly and the 1st Youngil county assembly were opened. In January 1, 1995, Pohang city and Yeongil-gun assembly were unified into Pohang city assembly. With its now 43 members Pohang city assembly opened the 1st city assembly on January 4. This was followed by the 2nd assembly held in July 12, 1995, the 3rd in July 7, 1998, the 4th in July 8, 2002 and the 5th in July 6, 2006. The 5th city assembly with its 32 members, will be working towards the improvement in the local autonomy and welfare of the citizens until June 30, 2010.
